Your AI Assistant Can Now Work With Your Files and Tasks in Files.fm
What if your AI assistant could do more than answer questions? What if it could find your files, organize folders and keep project tasks up to date, directly in your Files.fm account?
That is what the Files.fm MCP connector now makes possible. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants connect securely to external services. Our first MCP version could search and read files. Now your assistant can also organize your storage and work with tasks in Files.fm DMS, and connecting takes only a sign-in.
What can you ask your assistant to do?
Connect an MCP-compatible AI assistant to your Files.fm account and describe what you need in plain language:
- Find and understand files: "Find my latest project proposal, read it and summarize the key points."
- Organize your storage: "Create folders for the new project and move the related documents into them."
- Save and import files: "Save this summary as a text file in the project folder" or "Import the PDF from this link into my Files.fm folder."
- Review tasks and projects: "Show the open tasks in the website project and help me decide what needs attention first."
- Create and update tasks: "Create five tasks for our website redesign and assign them to the team."
- Collaborate: "Read this task and add a comment with your recommendations."
Instead of clicking through folders or copying information between applications, you describe the result and the assistant carries out the steps.
Three practical examples
Preparing a client meeting. Ask the assistant to find the latest contract and correspondence for a client, summarize the open questions and save the summary next to the documents.
Starting a new project. Let the assistant create the folder structure, move existing drafts into it and create the first DMS tasks with responsible people from the project team.
Weekly review. Ask for an overview of a project's tasks, let the assistant compare them with the documents in the project folder and add comments where something is missing.
Secure and under your control
You connect by signing in to Files.fm and approving an access request. The request clearly shows what the assistant is allowed to do: read files, manage files, read DMS tasks and projects, or change them. You do not need to create or paste an API key.
The assistant always works within your existing account permissions. It can create folders, add new files, rename and move items, but it cannot delete or overwrite files, change sharing settings or transfer ownership. In DMS, it works with tasks and projects in registers where you have full edit permission, and normal DMS notifications are sent when tasks change.
Your data stays in Files.fm. The assistant accesses it through authorized operations instead of you uploading everything into a chat. Content you ask the assistant to read is processed by your AI provider under its own terms.
How to get started
- In Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or another AI application that supports remote MCP servers, add a custom connector (MCP server) with this address: https://files.fm/mcp
- Sign in to Files.fm when asked and review the access request.
- Start asking your assistant to work with your files and tasks.
Any confirmed Files.fm account can connect, including free accounts; your plan's storage and file limits still apply. Whether custom connectors are available depends on the AI application and your plan with that provider.
Setup details for each client, the full list of tools and current limits are in the Files.fm MCP documentation.
From storage to a working space
Cloud storage used to be a place where you keep files and do every action yourself. With MCP, Files.fm becomes a workspace where your AI assistant helps you find information, keep documents in order and move projects forward, while you stay in control of what it can access.
